Glossary

  • DPI - Dots per Inch, a way to measure the number of times a sensor reads/updates. This is the same as CPI

  • CPI - Counts Per Inch, a way to measure the number of times a sensor reads/updates. This is the same as DPI

  • Lift off distance - The distance a mouse will stop tracking movement when the mouse is lifted up. Some mice have the ability for the user to change the setting.

  • Tracking speed - The speed at which a sensor can measure the movement. For mice this is commonly measured in Inches Per Second or Centimeters Per Second.

  • Response time - The time taken to transmit data from the device to the computer. Either measured in ms (Milliseconds) or in Hz (hertz is equivalent to cycles per second) - 1000Hz is equivalent to 1 ms.

  • Anti-ghosting - Ghosting is when a single keystroke or several keystrokes are "lost" due to the inability of a keyboard to process the signals that come from rapid keystrokes. Its is not just limited to gaming keyboards. Anti-ghosting is the ability for the devices to either buffer the rapid input, or send the signals onward with out loosing any of the input.

  • Palm Grip - The Palm Grip is the most natural and relaxed way for the hand to be rested on the mouse, it has the most amount of contact between the hand and mouse. It provides the most amount of support for your hand. Typically larger mice are favored for this type of grip.

  • Claw Grip - The Palm Grip is the most natural and relaxed way for the hand to be rested on the mouse, it has the most amount of contact between the hand and mouse. It provides the most amount of support for your hand. Typically larger mice are favored for this type of grip.

  • Finger-Tip Grip - Finger or Tip Grip has the smallest amount of contact between the hand and mouse. Typically only the fingertips are in contact with the mouse. This style can offer quick input and fast turns.

  • Laser sensor - This type sensor uses a small infrared laser to increased the resolution of the image taken by the mouse. The laser illumination enables superior surface tracking.

  • Optical sensor -

  • FPS - First Person Shooter

  • MMO - Massive Multi-player Online

  • RTS - Real Time Strategy

  • RPG - Role Playing Game

  • MMORPG - Massively multiplayer online role-playing games

  • NKRO - NKRO -> N-Key Roll Over - Being able to press as many keys as possible at the same time. Some keyboards are full NKRO while others have only a set number of keys being NKRO. Its not uncommon to find just the WASD and arrow keys supporting NKRO.
